Google Prepares Android 16 Launch with New Pixel Themes Feature

After showcasing major updates at Google I/O 2025 earlier this month, Google is preparing to launch Android 16 in the coming days, starting with Pixel phones. It appears that Pixel devices will also receive a major customization upgrade.

Developers testing early Android versions have found evidence of a Pixel themes feature in the latest Android 16 Quick Settings beta. The feature appears to be in its final testing stages before release.

Many popular Android devices, especially Samsung phones, already offer themes. Themes allow you to bundle wallpapers, colors, and icon styles into one package that can be applied with a single tap.

The themes feature doesn't work yet, and users must manually change their wallpaper and lock screen through the Wallpaper and Style section in Settings. However, the existing code suggests this feature is likely coming soon.

What's Coming?

It remains unclear whether users will browse through a gallery of themes created by Google and other users, or if they'll only be able to create custom combinations. Samsung phones currently offer themes in their Gallery section.

The timing of this feature's release is also uncertain. Android 16 with this feature could potentially arrive on Tuesday, June 3, though this date isn't confirmed.

Google might choose to release themes after launching the main Android 16 update for Pixel owners. Other Android phone manufacturers can then decide whether to include or skip Google's theme code based on their preferences.
